A Carbon Footprint is a measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of green house gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide.

Energy for Kids

Energy Ant was created in May 1975 by the Federal Energy Administration, the Department of Energy's predecessor, to tell kids about energy and how to use it wisely. “In 1998, the statistical arm of the Department of Energy, the Energy Information Administration or EIA, decided it would be fun to bring Energy Ant back as a guide to their kid’s page.” A stuffed Energy Ant visits classrooms and energy sites across the country, and you can read about his travels. A human-sized Energy Ant (really an EIA employee in costume) makes guest appearances at school events in the Washington, DC area to talk to students about energy and science. Energy Ant even has his own activity book (for 4th-7th grader students).

The wholesale cost of electricity from wind power plants has dropped below 4 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), very close to the cost of power from fossil fuel sources. Public utilities across the country and around the world are beginning to include wind in their mix of energy sources.
